English and French Language in the French Immersion Program
Students are assessed in English language in 4 strands: Oral Communication, Media Literacy, Reading and Writing. Students are assessed in French language in 4 strands: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. In the French Immersion program, we integrate between the subject areas and the English and French halves of the program often. Often, language concepts when referring to types of text, writing styles, reading strategies, comprehension strategies and various text features are presented in the English language program and those skills and strategies are then transferred and practiced with the French language in French class. Throughout the year we will explore many strategies in Reading and Writing, several of which have already been practiced and presented on the English side. This exploration will occur through lessons, literacy stations, daily 5 activities and created works. Our reading and writing will often be integrated with our learning in science and social studies. In French we will also put a great deal of emphasis on the spoken language by speaking, conversing and presenting frequently. We will also continue to train our French ears by listening to French being spoken by others in videos, songs and read-aloud texts. The progression of language acquisition follows the following format: First listening, then speaking followed by reading and writing. If students cannot understand the spoken language or speak it then they will not be able to read it or write in it effectively. Please visit the class website often for additional updates http://plrgrade3fi.blogspot.ca/

FAQ
Are there any other supplies you need for school?
A French-English dictionary to be kept at home would a useful resource.
Do you need indoor shoes?
Yes! Just like in the school students are required to bring an extra pair of shoes. This allows us to keep our learning environment neat and welcoming for all those in it.
Do you have any homework?
Yes! Students will be given activities to complete for homework on an as needed basis. If there is no direct homework given, students are encouraged to visit the classroom website for extra practice and use our online learning platforms such as DreamBox and Prodigy.
Additionally, Student should be reading for at least 20 minutes each night alternating between French and English. This reading can be done in many ways- through RazKids on a computer or tablet, through Lecture Enfants (coming soon), reading an online article, researching a favourite sport/hobby, looking through a cookbook, reading a book, etc.
