Media Literacy

We have been looking at Media.
Our inquiry question was..."Would you rather get information about a product from watching a video or from reading a written page?  Explain your thinking."

We viewed some product review videos from the following website:

Students also looked at parts of a well written review.

The students have reviewed how to get to the Halton "Elementary Internet Tools" in order to access learning tools at home.

When students use the Elementary Internet Tools at school they are automatically logged in as a Halton District Student.

In order for your child to use the Elementary Internet Tools at home, your child will need to use the sticker that was distributed to them earlier in the school year.  It has his/her Username beginning with the numeral 1 and requires a password consisting of 4 letters.  The Username and password is specific to your child and he/she must Log in accordingly.

The steps are as follows:
1) Go to School Web site
2) Go to Mrs. Tom's Library
3) Go to Elementary Internet Tools
4) Select the tool icon from the icons shown

We have practiced accessing Learn 360.
Here is an example of how to search a topic. (Please understand, the following case is a Mathematics topic.)

Type in the following keyword polygons in the search bar or type in the following title

2-Dimensional Shapes: Megamath—Shape and Space
Try a variety of topics and Filters.  The search will always default for Videos.  You can search Full Titles, Segments and for specific grades as well.

Please be advised that some of the videos are produced and created for American and United Kingdom audiences and will have content that matches the specific country.

*Your child’s “Just Right Book” Reading Level is noted in the top left corner of the goldenrod introductory insert in his/her red duotang. This level should be updated as your child progresses.

*The PLR Home Reading Cart is a shared resource.

*The books differ in number of pages and complexity.

*The book exchange day for your child is noted on the front of the red duotang:

*Please use the “Panther Paw” page to track reading.

*Your child should Read To Self to practice before reading to someone.
*Your child should Read To Someone in order to discuss what he/she understands (Comprehension), to get support for words he/she does not know the meaning of (Word Work) and get feedback about his/her reading fluency (Use of Punctuation and Expression in Voice).
